I have been married for thirty years;  2 daughters.  I left DLS in my fifth year because my parents moved to London.  I finished school in London.  Then got a job on BOAC as a steward flying around the world.  When I married I left the airlines and joined the Police Force.  I am currently working in Reading as a detective Sergeant.  The teacher who I remember most was Mr McSweeney who taught English, he lived with a family in Sheffield called Quigley and their son Martin was in my class.  When I got to London I found that my next-door neighbours were called Quigley and Martin was their cousin.  I have only met one other ex pupil since leaving DLS and that was Michael Gibbons who now lives in Reading. I went to school with his brother Patrick and we all came from Wath.

Personal Interests: Living and working in Boston USA. Worked for T Cook, Smith & Nephew and then Colgate who rather foolishly transferred me for a few years to the Caribbean. I then skedaddled to Boston as I had to wear shorts everyday. It was a bit unsettling as it took me back to the "short trou" policy at DLS -- I couldn't sell the "I'm too tall" argument. Just about to get married for the 1st time ---:0 For work I am a speaker and motivator!!!!!! Went out on my own nearly 5 years ago! Have an event for me to speak at? :)

I just looked through the list and Martin Mullane is my only classmate -- and I am not sure he counts as I think he was in Lockwood :) But seriously where are my fellow conspirators? Any other information: Five years spent at De La Salle. Started in the "b" stream but relegated to "c" for the duration. Memories of friends Harry Gray, Keith Sheppard, Brian Hubble and bad behaviour at the back of the chemistry lab. Stuart Wain expelled for misdemeanour on train from Chesterfield? Corporal punishment in spades. Skipping cross country at Beauchief for a quick smoke, delinquents all! I moved to Canada in '66. Finally got my degree as an adult student. Married, have two grown chidren: a son teaching school in Japan; a daughter living in Germany, soon to enter Norwich University UK. I'm now remarried to a lady with keen sensibilities and an eye for art and design at which she makes a meagre living. I spent many years in many different places running subsidiaries for an American mult-national. I've been self employed for the past 23 years and live in Vancouver, B.C. Any other information: I was the last of the breed from Worksop to go to DLS, just preceded by the Waltham brothers and Paul Shryane.  I left Upper 6th. with just 4 O-levels;  didn't want to work so went Worksop Tech. and somehow managed 2 A-levels;  now I did want to work so spent a year planting gravestones all over the country for the princely sum of five shillings and sixpence an hour and then it was back to academia--DLS Hopwood Hall----no work but plenty of rugby, drink and most importantly learning to DJ on the unsuspecting student body.  1972 saw me as a qualified teacher--respectable at last!!!!!!!Came to Oldham to teach, just for 2 years while I made my mistakes!  I'm still here now--basically at the same school.  My memories of Scott Road tend to be happy ones, as being from the outback (well Worksop) everything was bigger and better than I was used to at home and we certainly didn't have anything like the Esquire or Mojo clubs.  My biggest thanks to the school are probably to Ken O'Brien who never taught me, indeed left at the end of my 1st. year, but by then had said to the class one day 'Who besides Laughton is going to play rugby?'.   An idea was planted which I have been eternaly grateful for--I played until I had a heart attack at 45 and am still involved with RL which in its time has taken me to Australia twice , numerous trips to the South of France. I'm still pretending to teach despite having all my toes amputated from my right foot in 2002 and one off my left foot in November 2004.

Any other information: Decided to write something when I saw that "our kid" had written all the way from the U.S.A.  I have mixed memories of my days at DLS.  Some of the times were great and some were shite, but overall (and perhaps surprisingly) I have good memories of those days.  Maybe at my age your memory gets worse and perhaps many of the "good days" were when I was "wagging it" since I do remember being something of a specialist in this area.  I am married with 3 kids (2 boys and a girl) who are bi-lingual English/Japanese...The old dragon comes from Tokyo !  If nothing else, I did come away from DLS with some capability in languages which has been very useful in my career.  Having left school after my O levels I started work as an office boy at Viners (the cutlery people) performing menial tasks and only just earning enough for a piss up at the weekends (around 8 quid if I remember ).  In search of better jobs (and more cash) I moved to a couple of other companies before finding a position of Export Manager at a Chesterfield Plastics company.  I have now been involved in Overseas Sales and Marketing for over 19 years and still seem to enjoy most of the work.  There are not too many countries that I have not visited over the years and being paid to do it was great (although it isn't always like a holiday).  I have always lived in Sheffield and currently live in Bradway.  I have been to a couple of the "Old Boys" get togethers at the Dog and Partridge in the last couple of years and it was fun to meet with guys that I haven't seen for nearly 30 years (Isn't it amazing how the time passes ?).  I got to know about the meetings from Alan Todd whom I met by chance at Birc Hall golf course.  I would recommend the get together to all past "mates" since not only is it a good excuse for a few beers, but you get to see how much some people may have aged physically and yet are like teenagers mentally.  I certainly fall into this category after a few pints.  I used to occasionally see Broderick Howell at the Old Sidings in Dronfield, but I think he got barred and I haven't seen him for a few years now.  Anyway I can't believe how much I am "going on" .  If anyone wants to get together for a pint or a game of pool etc. then just get in touch.  Home Tel. 0114 2360147 0114 2353356 Mobile 07785 555766

Left DLS in June '78 for a job as an electrician, which over the years has developed into a consultant engineer's position (pretending to work). I have some vague memories of DLS some of which you may be able to fill details in for me. Did we push a sports car belonging to a teacher called Leedham or Leadham or similar (I think it was a MGBGT) onto the field and wrap it up for his birthday, and it got stuck in the mud? Also I seem to remember a tuck shop raid which "no one did it sir" where all the stock was nicked...anyone else remember? Does anyone remember a teacher called Griffiths, he tended to slaver all over you when he got angry, still he wasn't a bad teacher. Tom Balding has a pub in town now but I still remember him singing during the English lesson about "Crickets farting" top bloke. Was there two Grant brothers who taught there? "Piggy" Grant and ??Grant (strapper) I think? Be nice to hear from any of you who know me but I must admit I am not good with names and don't recognise that many on here. I do remember the Mallinders though, and the cruel things some people did to them. Including the period when we used to shout "Mallinder" and as they turned, the whole school yard did a kind of Mexican wave in reverse ducking under their imaginary huge nose until they spotted who said it and told us to f*ck off. Too many memories for here, be nice to see or hear from anyone who remembers me.

Have many great memories of DLS.  Strapper Grant was my first form teacher.  Could be a bit easy to cross, but on the whole an ok guy.  Brother Serenus (Serry) was a laugh though I don't always think he intended to be. Does no one remember that Alpheus's "leather bat" was his "biffer" and he would ask the class whether the victim should get a penny one, a tuppeny one or a threppny one?  As I recall the delighted throng would bay for blood and he would usually give you a tuppny one which, certainly put me off copying out homework on the 8.05 train from Chesterfield in the morning, because behind that genial great uncle smile there lay a cold grin and cold steel - I must have been the only person in the world that had not heard the hackneyed limerick about Leeds, seeds and weeds.  But it was'nt all beatings.  There were plenty of good times and very good friends and some excellent teachers.  E.g. Bro. Serenus, Arthur? Thelwall, Jack Justice.....very gifted teachers.  Also does anyone remember an Irish supply Latin called Mulcahy or Mulcer (pronounced Mulkerr)?  What a nutter, but I learned more from him in a couple of months than I did in four years with Sam Cleary.  Mind you...... Who remembers going to Hillsborough to watch Pele play for Santos against Wednesday in 1971/72?  Vince Green, Paul Kelly, Vik Daron and I went to Wilf to persuade him that the Sixth Form should be shut down for the afternoon because it was a chance that would never arise again.  He listened for about ten minutes and then said he would close the whole school.  There were other things than beatings.  What is brave plying?  The men of sterling mould did it keeping the banner flying.  I don't recall setting eyes on the banner.

Any other information: Lived in Spain since 1985.  Married to Elena since 1990.  We have two great kids - Enya is 9 and Neil is 5.  We live about 45 km south of Barcelona just inland from the coastal resort of Sitges.  I teach English at the University of Barcelona and write English language teaching materials.  De La Salle was a bit of an anachronism but it had some good teachers - Tom Boulding (inspired and very funny), Jack Justice (amazing diagrams on the blackboard and a superb teacher!), Alan Needham (great haircut!), Ken Watkin (encyclopaedic knowledge of Test Match cricket) and of course the maths teacher, Spike.  Some of my contemporaries - Sean Kelly, Chris Wright, Mick Gribben (we all went on to university at Bangor, N. Wales) - also, Jimmy McKinney, Mark Pickin, Dave Devins, Gabriel Rabittee, Nick Wright, Chris Peard, Sean Preece, Mark O'Reilly, John Statham, Tim Cave and many others.

Now run my own business trying to do good in health education.
