Overview of the Infection Control Software

The Infection Control System is acquired-infection surveillance software for the management and control of hospital infection alerts, eg MRSA and CDIF.  The software has been successfully implemented at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and a number of other Trusts are interested in the system.

KPMD have developed the Infection Control software to use Microsoft SQL Server database software as the central database server. The system is a web-based application which uses internet browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer for multi-user client access across multiple sites. This allows infection control nurses, ward nurses and senior management, perhaps in different hospitals within an NHS Trust, to access acquired infection surveillance records over their intranet.

Key features are:

  • a working screen for easy searching, ordering and filtering of alerts
  • allocation of alerts to infection control nurses
  • different levels of security for administrators, infection control nurses, ward nurses and senior management
  • generation of standard forms and reports
  • easy access and direct data input for ward nurses
  • recording of enteric incidents
  • generation of management reports using graphs, data tables etc as required
  • the system can be tailored to meet your precise requirements

  The Infection Control System

The key data used by the software is:

  • patient - the name and demographic details of the patient
  • infection - infection details, date of result, organism, hospital acquired, notes
  • alert organisms eg MRSA and CDIF - name, code etc
  • ward
  • lab results
  • enteric incidents

The software can be installed to link with existing Patient Access and Pathology Systems. Alerts are either automatically generated from legacy systems or entered into the system. Individual infection control nurses can view their workload and prepare for ward visits. Whilst on the ward, the infection control nurse can view infection details with the ward nurse and update the details. Standard notes can be generated and printed for inclusion in patient records. Ward nurses can also log into the system and update details as necessary. Infection control nurses, ward nurses and senior managment can log into the system for up-to-date reports at the appropriate level.
